Critical Essay Step By Step Guide
During your studies, you will receive a large number of written assignments that you will have to complete. They are supposed to develop the necessary skills in you, such as generalization or specification. All these factors will increase your marketability in the job market in the future. By completing such tasks, you will learn to develop your own approach to the problem and analyze it objectively. You will be faced with the need to write a series of papers that will require you to critique various issues and subjects.
By going through the materials you have to analyze, you can either agree or disagree with some of the ideas expressed by the author. You can also partially agree with a thesis statement and disapprove of the evidence it provides. It doesn't matter to your teacher whether you agree or disagree, you should remain critical of the thing you are researching. You must be neutral about the subject and portray the situation as objectively as possible. Objective criticism is an integral part of any essay.
The structure of the essay should look like this:
1) A brief introduction that includes a thesis statement;
2) the main part, which contains all the evidence and arguments relevant to the question;
3) Summary paragraph.
Whatever point of view you take, you should support your claim with credible evidence and a logical chain of facts. You can support or disagree with the claims made in the introductory material, but you should remember to back up all your facts with solid evidence. Your argument is an important part of your writing assignment. It is not just a critical essay where you are expected to show a coherent and logical scheme of evidence. This ability is extremely important in an argumentative essay. In my experience, students find the simple statement of fact a valuable motivator to change the reader's opinion.
Not so if you take a closer look. The argument you present should be properly structured and every fact you present should be supported by a reliable source of information. Facts do not appear out of thin air, we take them from information sources that you analyze.
If you have a choice, choose a topic that you are familiar with. To get a successful job, you should work on a topic that you are familiar with. It would be better if you avoid discussing modern problems and issues in your paper and do not make them the center of your essay. It is very hard to find a credible source when there are millions of opinions and none of them are supported by good evidence.
It is also quite impossible to describe the general state of affairs in a five-paragraph essay, so it is better to avoid modern topics that appear too often in the news.
